In memorandum: George Sapulich - Early Years in Pennsylvania
George Sapulich grew up in a one block mining town in Johnstown Pennsylvania. His parents were emigrants. He was born 2nd from the youngest amongst many brothers and sisters. His father was a victim of a beating that left him institutionalized most of George's life, so he didn't have many clear memories of his dad. He was a support to his mom, and had jobs as a young boy to contribute to the family.
George grew up without a lot of protections. Got bullied early on, but quickly toughen up. He learn to make his own way, to make decisions that were not clear, or easy without a lot of guidance. He had a responsible nature. Was hard working, smart. After high school, he was accepted to college where he planned to study art. His college plans were preempted by the draft, and instead, he served in the Army in World War II. When it came close to discharge, George considered a career in the military and had been accepted for special training to become an overseas translator due to his fluency in languages. This plan was redirected when his mother requested he return home to help her and George did so, then working in the Pennsylvania coal mines for many years.
