Warren C. Plantinga, age 89, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was a beloved and faithful husband to Edie (Gross) for almost 70 years and together as a couple for 73. He was a dedicated and loving dad to Gary Plantinga, Nancy Plantinga, Jerry Plantinga (Becky), Jeff Plantinga (Diane) [both deceased], Beverly Swanson (Frank), Laurie Fischer and Jennifer Carli (Thomas). Warren was a a cherished grandpa to 15: Alex,Jason and Sarah Carli, Mallory, Maddie, Nick and Christina Fischer, Brittney Gentry (Byron), Courtney Ray (Shaun), Ashley, Matt, Emily and Natalie Swanson, Michael Plantinga (Corrine) and Kristen Owensby (William). He was great-grandpa to 13: Becca, Blake, Brock and Bruce Gentry, Abbey, Ashlynn, Jayden and Mecca Owensby, Jenna, Jordan and Harper Plantinga, Austin and Emma Swanson.
The Plantinga family celebrations were big and full of life and energy! Warren worked hard for his family, and instilled that in his children, but he also knew how to have fun. Driving a boat and pulling his kids (young and old) and their friends on tubes or skis was his favorite thing to do. He was still skiing when he was 87. Family vacations were always at a cottage rental in Michigan where friends and other family members joined in the fun in and on the water.
Warren also brought lots of laughter to the family. Even in his final days of life, he was making remarks to bring a smile (or belly laugh) to his health care team and his family. Warren and his son Jeff (now deceased) were a great pair of jokesters; they're going to make a great comic team in Heaven! Warren was also preceded in death by his parents, Garret and Florence Plantinga, brother Clifford Plantinga and his sisters, Dorathy VanderVeen, Marcella Cain and Esther Hooks. He was the dear uncle to many neices and nephews.
Warren was a 1949 graduate of Chicago Vocational High School. He owned and operated Warren's Texaco at 107th & Wentworth Ave. in Roseland for 10 years. This was a favorite meeting place for the local “boys” on
Sunday nights after church. Warren worked as a stationary engineer at both Monarch Laundry and Hoekstra
Uniform Rental Service.
