Thomas John Pendergast, age 75, known affectionately as Tom or Uncle Tommy, was born into eternal life on February 5, 2026. His infectious laugh and dry sense of humor will be missed by all.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, Karen Szpajer. Loving father of Amy (Benjamin) MacBeth, Kathryn (Nicholas Apuzzo) Pendergast, and Ann Pendergast. Dear brother of Judy (Edward) Richter, Mary Pendergast, and the late Robert (Elaine) Pendergast. Fond uncle to Rene Stroud, Rosemary Richter, Marianne Richter, Robert Pendergast, Jr., Julie Brady, Alison Hecimovich, Kristen Kampe, Brian Hecimovich, and the late Lisa Richter.
Tom graduated from the University of Illinois, where he honed his razor-sharp wit along with his intellect. Not one to rest on his laurels, Tom continued his education at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, earning a Juris Doctorate. Because of his altruistic nature, he became an attorney with the Cook County Public Defender’s office and spent much of his career at the Markham Courthouse.
Tom will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors, gardening, fishing, golf, and his talent on the guitar. He loved rock, surf, and blues music. Tom was a true beer connoisseur.
Please join us for a celebration of a life well lived at Colonial Chapel and Mass at St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr Church where Tom was an usher for many years.
