Theodore Van Vliet

Theodore Van Vliet, 87, died on Tuesday, November 1,2005 at Rest Haven South Christian Services in South Holland, after a long illness falling asleep in the faith and hope of the gospel.
Bom in Lucas, Michigan on September 7,1918, of the Rev. Pete D. and Mrs. Margaret Ten Hoor Van Vliet. During the following year, the family moved to Chicago where his father was minister of the First Christian Reformed Church of Englcwood. In 1923 the Van Vliets returned to Michigan to minister to the South Olive Christian Reformed Church, near Holland, Michigan.
A graduate of Holland Christian High School and Hope College, Mr. Van Vliet also studied at Calvin College and Theological Seminary. He served with distinction in the United States Army during the Second World War. After being a Christian school teacher in Michigan, Colorado, and California, he was employed by Armour and Company, by the Ford Motor Company, and finally the University of Chicago Hospital, from where he retired in 1981. Until recently, Mr. Van Vliet and his wife Pearl continued to serve the hospital as volunteers, with thousands of hours to their credit and a remarkable record of fidelity and unselfish kindness.
Mr. Van Vliet was an active and faithful member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Oak Lawn, where be served as a deacon and an elder. Also important to him was the work of the Back to God Hour, to which he gave himself in its correspondence program.
Mr. Van Vliet was preceded in death by a darling daughter Margaret Jeanette (1946-1961); his brothers, David F. and Foster M. Van Vliet; and his sister Elizabeth Van Vliet De Witt.
He is survived by his beloved wife of more than sixty years, Pearl Vander Laan Van Vliet; by sisters- and brother-in-law Harriet Vander Zwaag Van Vliet, Christine Vander Laan and Christian Beezhold, Henrietta Vander Laan Mallahan and Wilhelmina Greenfield Vander Laan; and many loving nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him sorely.
Mr. Van Vliet will be laid to rest next to his beloved daughter at Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial service in the Calvin Christian Reformed Church of Oak Lawn will be held November 5, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. Gifts in his memory may be sent.
