Michael T. Szum, age 85, beloved husband for 65 years to Marilyn, nee Glenn. Loving father of David (Julie) Szum, Michelle (Glen) Bowman, and Paul (Paula) Szum. Cherished grandfather of Benjamin Szum, Samantha (Stephan) Thompson, Jonas Szum; Jason (Chelsie) Bowman, Andrew Bowman; Michael, Matthew, and Brianna Szum. Dearest great-grandfather of Nolan, Levi, Brady, and Brooklyn. Dearest brother of Bernadette (Roger) Sims and preceded in death by siblings Marcie (late Bill) Mize, Pat (Lou) Potempa, and Fred (late Rita) Szum. Dear brother-in-law of Michael (late Rita) and preceded in death by David (Marianne) and Patrick (Cheryl) Glenn. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Born into a Polish family on Chicago’s south side, Michael was a Chicago native from start to finish. He loved the Chicago Bears, Chicago the city, and Chicago style pizza. He met Marilyn on a blind date and the rest is history. They first lived on Chicago’s south side near 88 th and May where they brought their first two children, David and Michelle, into the world. Afterward they lived in Burbank, where they had their thirdchild, Paul. After that they lived in Oak Lawn, Schaumburg and most recently, in Matteson.
He was a family man through and through and not only espoused those values to his children but also clearly lived them and embodied them with love despite being a traveling sales expert in the steel industry. Always quick with a joke (especially cornydad and somewhat risque jokes, especially on the golf course). Mike and Marilyn greatly enjoyed going to the annual (ish) Glenn family reunion and it was the highlight of their travels.
Mike was a world war 2 buff and greatly enjoyed watching his world war 2 movies – old and new. He also greatly enjoyed the cuisine of his Polish heritage. Michael will be greatly missed by his family and the hole created by his returning to his Lord will be impossible to fill.
