Mark Edward Staehlin, age 70, of Palos Heights, passed away at home on August 7, 2026, after a valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.
Born on March 9, 1956, Mark was the son of Robert and June Staehlin who preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Lori (nee Rupich), his beloved children, Nicole (Matt) Laricy, Kimberly (Mickey) Hobson, Lauren (Joe) Rueck, and John (Ashlyn) Staehlin and his 9 adored grandchildren, Rhone, Remi, Elle, Cru, Jack, L.J., Lux, Isla and Jett. He was the fond brother of Kurt (Peggy), David, and the late Karl (Mary). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues who will miss him dearly.
Mark took great pride in his distinguished career and dedicated much of his life to serving the field of education. He began his career as a CPA, working in the profession for 12 years, before moving to school business and education. He retired as the Controller at CHSD District 99 and was the past president of the Illinois Association of School Business Officials (IASBO) where he was honored with the prestigious IASBO Monarch Award in 2020. He also served on the District 128 Board of Education for 16 years, where he was president for much of that time. His commitment to education, and to the students, families, and communities he served was an important part of his life and legacy.
Outside of work, Mark enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He loved to golf, collect coins, spend time with his family, and share a good joke. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humor brought joy to the people around him. He always seemed to have a joke ready and had a gift for bringing smiles and laughter wherever he went.
While his professional accomplishments made a lasting difference in the world of education, Mark will be most deeply missed and fondly remembered for his laughter, his stories, his generosity and his love of family which will live on in those fortunate to have known him.
