Lucille Shimanek,  (nee Kaehler). Born October 25, 1917 passed away on Wednesday, May 17th in her home of 50 years, the “Edge of the Wood,” in Calumet City with family present following a long illness.  Lucille met the love of her life James Shimanek at Lindbloom High School.  James preceded her in death in 1993. Loving mother of Carolyn (Fred) Hill, Barbara (Damian) Santay and Mark (Judy) Shimanek.  Proud grandmother of David & Suzy Hill, Damian & Diana Santay,  Jody & Adam Shimanek. Preceded in death by sisters Adeline Glendening, Alberta Zellers and brother Harold Kaehler.

Lucille was retired from K-Mart where she worked in the appliance departments of the Dolton and Lansing stores.  Following retirement Lucille enjoyed European travel, sailing through the Panama Canal, volunteering for Goodwill, St. Margaret Hospital and spending time with friends and family.

Lucille spent her final years with her devoted caregiver and son-in-law Damian Santay where they would often picnic at the Indiana Dunes and tour points of interest throughout Chicagoland sampling the cuisines of many restaurants with friends and helpers, especially Sandra Santay, Lori Steffel and John Karcher.

Private funeral arrangements entrusted to Maher Funeral Home, Tinley Park, Illinois.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (8430 W. Bryn Mawr, Chgo Il. 60631) or to the family.  There will be a celebration of Lucille’s life in July.
