Joyce was born in Chicago on January 27, 1939, into a loving family of strong Christian faith. The Drechsels moved to the Chicago side of Riverdale in 1945, where she graduated from Scanlan school (with nine other classmates) in 1952 and Chicago Vocational High School in 1956. The result was an accounting career which spanned 42 years, mostly at CNA Insurance Company, until her retirement in March, 1998.
Work vacations were spent traveling with family and friends. A highlight was a 1967 trip to Europe with her mother to visit her brother stationed overseas in the Army. The three of them toured six countries in his red Volkswagen, which resulted in a great time and wonderful memories.
Joyce met Carl, her soulmate, at a singles group in Frankfort, Illinois, married him in 1974, and they moved to a new home in Tinley Park. After retirement they spent 16 years in Wheatfield, Indiana, before moving to Crown Point in 2014. She enjoyed the park district senior activities – especially the large pinochle group. She was a proficient player who enjoyed the friendly competition and community feel. She ultimately became treasurer of the group and helped organize the events.
Joyce became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ at age 12. Her family belonged to Bible Fellowship Church, where she enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher and later assisted with bookkeeping, annual church conferences, etc. She and Carl remained faithful members until the church closed. Its parishioners were a close-knit loving group who thought of one another as extended family. Joyce felt the Lord had blessed her in many ways and she was truly thankful.
