Harry E. Kirchman

October 8, 1930 — July 2, 2005

Harry “Harry King” Kirchman - well known radio broadcaster died at 74, July 2nd, 2005.

His long and storied broadcast career began in 1953 at KDLM in Detroit Lakes, MN where “Harry the Horse Thief” hit the country airwaves and was an immediate sensation.

There followed a stop in Springfield, IL at WMAY where he became a Rock ‘N Roll deejay and Rock MC presenting such stars as Connie Francis, Frankie Avalon and Chuck Berry.

The pinnacle of broadcast success, as far as Harry was concerned, came in 1966 in Chicago where Gordon McLendon called requiring his collaboration in putting the first 24-hour all news radio station, WNUS, on the air.

After 30 years in the broadcasting business, “Mr. King” entered a new phase in his life as a Humanitarian promoting “Dialogue for the Blind” and other local charities like mentoring third grade classes in reading improvement. He also worked for years for veterans and their families through the Veterans Administration across the country. He also worked for several years with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Act), including overseeing Cuban refugee disbursement into the United States from a post at Camp McCoy, WI.
