Douglas Eugene Roby, age 70, US Navy Veteran, passed away into glory unexpectedly on April 2, 2024, surrounded by loving family and good friends. He was 70 years young, living in Monroe, NC.
Doug was born on January 26, 1954, to Barbara Joan and Clarence Roby in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He and his parents lived in Chicago, Illinois, where Doug lived a full, loving, family-filled upbringing as the third sibling of eight.
While attending Bogan High School, Doug was a leader of the Student Advisory Board to the Student Council in his senior year. After graduating, he enlisted in the Navy, was promoted as Drill Sergeant in boot camp and led his comrades at the graduation ceremony carrying his sword. He served aboard the USS Mount Whitney as an EM3 electrical repairman for the ship's power systems. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service, was honorably discharged in 1976 and in the Naval Reserves for two years.
Upon returning to civilian life, Doug secured a position with Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, Illinois, working with their power systems.
Doug felt called to minister as a result of his salvation conversion aboard the USS Mount Whitney. He enrolled at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for ministerial training. While developing his skills, he combined GI funding and work to minister at the Knoxville Rescue Mission. Upon graduation with his ministerial degree, he returned to Chicago, worked at the family business, R&G Industrial Heat Treating, while ministering to high school friends and preaching at Pacific Garden Rescue Mission in Chicago. He recorded his own salvation testimony to be broadcast on the radio program "Unshackled", recording A2043.
Doug's heart for serving people helped start the fledgling ministry Victory Homes for Boys. When property was acquired near Dunbar, Wisconsin, Doug followed to teach and minister for the next five years.
His vision for reaching people led Doug to the Bible Broadcast Network (BBN Radio). For almost thirty years, he wove his electrical skills and ministerial training to make a powerful impact throughout the United States.
Douglas is predeceased by his parents Clarence and Barbara Joan Roby and sister Gail Bankowski.
Left to cherish his memory are his siblings Stephen (Constance) Roby, Barbara (Thomas) Lepkowski, Diane (Mark) Gorecki, Dawn Gunia, Laurie Buch, and Michael (Lynn) Roby as well as his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.
