Diana Almanza

October 4, 1958 — June 20, 2024

With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Diana Estella Almanza, aged 65, on June 20, 2024. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Diana's departure has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her.

Born on October 4th, 1958, in Bay City, Texas, and raised in Mercedes, Texas, Diana was the cherished daughter of Elida Hernandez and the late Tony Almanza. She is survived by her devoted children: Philip Speer, aged 47; Anna Edfors, aged 33; and Kirsten Edfors, aged 30. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Ella and Lucia Speer; her sisters, Rose Hernandez, Blanca Almanza, and Dalia Almanza-Smith; her nephews, Julian and Aaron Hernandez; and her countless friends.

After graduating from the University of Chicago, Diana dedicated her career to education and served as a sociology professor in Chicago. Her devoted commitment to teaching made a lasting impact on countless lives. She spoke passionately for those who didn’t have a voice, she acted to reshape legislation and fought relentlessly against unfair systems, she knew no limits. Her unwavering commitment to justice and activism left an indelible mark on the community and whose lives she touched.

Diana was a free-spirited warrior of life with a heart of gold. She enjoyed Willie Nelson with her whiskey, photography, and adventurous road trips. Her legacy of laughter, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire everyone fortunate to know her. Her sudden passing is a reminder of the unforgiving nature of life.
She will be deeply missed, may her spirit live on as she rests in peace.

Family and friends are invited to join us to honor and celebrate the life of Diana at Mrs. Murhpy and Sons Irish Bistro, 3905 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL 60613 on Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 1:00 - 4:00PM.
