We would like to share a story about someone truly extraordinary—someone we all cherish deeply: Annamay Duncan. Her life and legacy are a testament to the profound impact one person can have on countless lives.
Annamay was a teacher with a special gift. She dedicated herself to helping children reach their full potential. Annamay started with teaching elementary school but transitioned to teaching junior high children with learning difficulties. Many of these children were ones that other teachers had struggled to reach, but Annamay refused to give up on anybody. Many of these children, who went on to graduate high school, wrote her letters or stopped by to thank her. Later in life, she received her Masters degree in reading recovery and began teaching younger children who struggled to read. She had an incredible ability to see beyond a child's struggles. Where others saw difficulty, she saw potential. Her patience was endless, her encouragement unwavering. To her, every stumble was a step forward, and every mispronunciation a chance to learn and grow.
But Annamay's story doesn’t end with her retirement. Even after leaving the classroom, her love for teaching and her commitment to helping children never wavered. She continued to volunteer at the local elementary school, turning her retirement into an opportunity to reach even more young readers.
Annamay's influence extends far beyond the pages of the books she helped her students read. She instilled in them a love of learning, a belief in their own abilities, and the confidence to face challenges with courage. Her legacy lives on in the countless children she touched and in the family she loved so dearly.
As we remember Annamay, let’s celebrate her incredible dedication and the love she poured into everything she did. She taught us that with patience, understanding, and faith, we can help others achieve their dreams. Her story is a reminder of the profound difference one person can make, and her spirit will continue to inspire us.
