Obituary for Walker J. "Wally" Busse
Walker John Busse, age 94, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Wally – as he was known to all – was preceded in death by his first wife, Henrietta (Doff) Busse in 1953. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Annette (Bos) Busse and his 5 children: Pamela (Clarence) Neander of Cornell, IL, Linda (Gregg) Wickstra of Sanibel, FL, Beth Ann (Larry) Hammilman of O’Fallon, MO, Mark (Cynthia) Busse of Crestwood, IL and Scott (Jill) Busse of Orland Park, IL He has 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Wally, a WW II Navy combat veteran and member of the Greatest Generation, was born in Chicago on January 16, 1926. He was raised in Beecher, Il and graduated from Beecher High School in 1943. After high school he enlisted in the navy and spent 2 years on the aircraft carrier San Jacinto as a motor machinist mate in the Pacific Theatre.
Upon marriage in 1947 he moved back to the Chicago Southwest suburbs,. Wally was a loving, dedicated husband and father who raised his family to love God, honor country and take pride in working hard. He was an unfailingly dependable and conscientious employee of Ozinga, retiring in 1988 with 35 years of excellent service. He and Annette were active members of Mt. Greenwood Reformed Church and Calvary Church of Orland Park.
Retirement brought the opportunity for him and Annette to travel, which they did extensively, touring Australia, Pacific islands and Alaska. A lover of history, he especially enjoyed their trip to Europe. Many winters found them basking in the sunshine in Bradenton Florida, before spending the last 10 years with his wife, Annette, at Peace Village, an active adult retirement complex in Palos Park, IL., were he was known and loved for his outgoing personality and good natured kidding and harassment of staff and friends.
Wally kept active both physically and mentally. He was an excellent bowler and spent as many nice days as possible on the golf course. Declining health found him in his favorite chair with his newspapers, magazines and ever present crossword puzzles. He had a great sense of humor and always had the latest jokes from the Readers Digest ready to tell.
A man who was good with his hands, he spent his most fulfilling times helping others with household or maintenance projects. He was a valued asset to the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store in Orland Park where he repaired and refurbished donations.
Visitation Thursday, February 13, 2020 from 3-7 PM with a Funeral Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at Colonial Chapel 15525 S. 73rd Ave. (155th/Wheeler Dr. & Harlem) Orland Park, IL. Interment private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
