Obituary for Richard L. "Dick" Mahoney
Richard (Dick) L. Mahoney of Orland Park, IL passed away October 29, 2019.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosalind, and his children, Rick and Jean (Lachat) of Mokena, IL, Dede and John (Petraiuolo) of Marlborough, CT, and Julie and Jay (Gosser) of DePere, WI. He will also live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Brandon and Caitlin Mahoney, Areana Petraiuolo, and Madison and Mitchell Gosser.
Dick was born in Ryan, Iowa on July 27, 1936-the youngest of nine children. He is survived by his sister Generose Porteous of Des Moines, IA and his sister-in-law, Marge Mahoney of Marion, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Mae (Sullivan) Mahoney, his brothers LaVerne, William, James, and Dorance, and his sisters Huberta Donlin, Lorraine Mahoney and Colista Phillips.
Dick was a member of Teamsters Unions 710 and 722. He spent his career on the open highways, driving for Consolidated Freightways - a job he truly enjoyed until his retirement 20 years ago. He was known by his CB name, Snuffy, and made many friends at many mile markers across the country. He was honored by the Illinois Safety Council and various other agencies for his safe driving. He was proud to have a CF fleet semi named after him in honor of having driven over 3,000,000 accident free miles.
He was a kind, caring, generous man to anyone he met and, if they were lucky enough, they got to see his quick wit and humor. He was a true Irishman with a love of storytelling, beer and BS:) Never at a loss for words, his quick wit and easy smile made for many friends. His Irish charm and bigger-than-life personality will live on through the memories and stories of his family and friends, his many nieces, nephews, neighbors and driving buddies. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and never missed an opportunity to support them through triumphs and tragedies. He was truly “the favorite uncle”. He was a great grandpa to his grandkids, could always make them laugh with his antics, and he loved them dearly. He will forever remain in our hearts and be missed by all that knew him.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon, that will take place at Durbins of Tinley Park, 17265 Oak Park Avenue, on Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 1:30 - 4:30 pm.
