Obituary for Marvin H. DeVries

Marvin Henry DeVries, age 94, died on July 1, 2020. His steady faith led him throughout his life, and in death he joins a heavenly choir, singing praises to his Savior Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Mildred DeVries, nee vanStedum, his parents, Henry and Jenny DeVries, his twin brother Edward DeVries, and sister Jeannie De Vries DenBesten. His daughters and sons-in law celebrate his life and mourn his death: Claudia and Marc Beversluis, Cari and Richard Shields, Jan and John Klompmaker, and Sharon and Scott Koop. Grandchildren were especially dear to him: David Beversluis, Maria and Matt van Leeuwen, Claire and Matt Veltkamp, Julia and Colin Shields Crestay, Evan Shields, Thomas and Leslie Shields, Rachel Klompmaker, Daniel and Maria Klompmaker, Esther Klompmaker, Laura and Adam Schwabauer, Trevor Koop and his fiancé Rebecca Dorn, and Elizabeth Koop. Marvin delighted in nine great grandchildren, including two sets of twins who reminded him of his own childhood as a twin. He is also survived by his sister Winifred DeVries Nydam and sister-in-law Nellie DeVries.

Marvin was a graduate of Pullman Technical High School and the Illinois Institute of Technology. His Roseland business, O’Connell Electric, was dear to his heart and an opportunity for service and friendship as well. Marvin had a generous heart and was a loyal servant of his communities, serving repeatedly on boards and councils for churches (most recently Grace Community CRC), schools (Roseland Christian School and Chicago Christian High School) and his neighborhoods. More recently he was a loved member of the community at Smith Village in Chicago. The family especially thanks the residents and staff for their care and friendship during these last years and the recent months when COVID prevented our visits.

A private family memorial will be held. As a veteran of the Army Air Corp at the close of World War Two, Marvin will be buried in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, where his late wife is also buried.
