Obituary for Gene Winship
Gene Winship of Midlothian, IL, formerly of Crestwood, IL and Monaca, PA passed away on Wednesday, April 27 at home.
Gene was born on March 11, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was raised in Monaca, PA and graduated from Monaca Senior High School, along with his wife, in 1960. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Air Force from 1962-65 as a munitions specialist in Okinawa, Vietnam and Thailand. Upon his return, he attended technical school in Pittsburgh, PA while working in the steel mill at night.
He was united in marriage to Christine Linn on November 26, 1966 at the First Presbyterian Church, Rochester, PA. After a number of relocations, the Winships made their home in Crestwood, IL where they raised two daughters.
Gene retired in 2006 from ABN-AMRO Bank after a 40 year career in telecommunications. Gene was a charter member of Grace Fellowship Church, Oak Forest, IL where he served in many roles, notably as Treasurer and Mr. Fix-It.
He loved talking about cars, especially Corvettes, travelling with family and friends, was always up for a road trip, a coffee run, watching old movies, reading, and especially attending and cheering for his grandkids at baseball games, basketball games, soccer games, softball games, volleyball matches, recitals, and musicals. He was generous and kind and his smile will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Christine, loving daughters, Joy (Doug) Bohrer, Palatine, IL and Jill (Mark) Carrera, Oak Forest, IL and adored grandchildren: Tiffanie, Deanna, Julia, Melia Bohrer and Kennedy (Caleb) Johnson, Mark, Jr (Alyssa), Kinsey, Kamden, Mitchell and Michael Carrera.
Visitation Wednesday, May 11, 2022 from 3-8 p.m. at Colonial Chapel, 15525 S. 73rd Ave. (155th/Wheeler Dr. & Harlem) Orland Park, IL. Committal Service with Military Honors Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. A Memorial Service to celebrate Gene's life will take place on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Grace Fellowship Church, 15150 S. Oak Park, Oak Forest, IL 60452 at 11:30 a.m.
