I have so many cherished memories with my Opa. I loved visiting and wandering through their garden. Playing under the bridge he built, listening while he lamented over the squirrels in his trees, watching him as he pruned back his trees and burn the cut offs in his outdoor stove.
I always loved exploring the outdoors with him. Whether fishing along the river, exploring the Little Red School house, or wandering the forest preserves. He was able to show and share the awe that the natural world provides for us.
My favourite memories though are listening to him chat about his childhood. His face would light up and his eyes would twinkle as he recounted how he would steal goose and turkey eggs from the neighbors. Or how during the war he delivered bread for the baker, and he once dumped his bike into a ditch full of murky water. He had to tow it all back to the baker, put it in the oven to dry back out, and redeliver it all to the customers. Once when he immigrated to the US he worked his way up north working on farms, but when he got paidin Canadian and he relized he had wandered all the way into Canada without even knowing it.
I am so grateful that he was able to meet my daughter, Alena. The moments that we all shared will forever be cherished.
Opa will be deeply missed by all, and I am blessed to have had a relationship with him.

To Marlene, Evelyn, Mike and John and families, I send my sympathy and prayers during this difficult and sad time with the passing of you Dad. May your memories of your Dad keep him alive in your hearts forever. I remember well what a great fisherman Uncle Eddie was and how much he enjoyed fishing. I pray the Lord be with you all and comfort you.

Opa loved to be outdoors. I remember playing with him in his vegetable garden as a small child and he pointed out all the different varieties and kept muttering under his breath how to keep the squirrels and rabbits out with chicken wire fence. The rabbits had other ideas and continually found their way in, but he would mend the fence and reinforce it. He taught me how to carefully tend to living things.

I remember waking up early at their home and helping him pick up the sticks each morning and throw them into his chimney fireplace he made by hand. I marveled at their beautiful backyard they made together and the homemade pond, and little bridge.

On Easter, they hid so many eggs that 7 grandchildren couldn’t even find them all. Later that year in summer I found another egg and Opa and I shared the hard marshmallow candy together.

I miss his firm handshakes. I miss his constant singing. I miss his huge glasses. I miss his car rides that always smelled like fish. I miss his instruction to eat all my food. I miss him.

I have lots of great memories with my Opa... walks in the forest preserves, fishing all the best ponds an streams, finding arrowheads in the fields after a plow and rain, admiring the things he built, visiting natural history museums, and many more. He was strong in character and had a great sense of humor! We love and miss you Opa.
