Herman Roy VanderWall Sr., age 80, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on September 24, 2018 at Tucson Medical Center following a brief illness.

He leaves his wife, Sandra (Boonstra) VanderWall; his daughter, Brenda VanderWall; son, Roy VanderWall, Jr.; son, Ted (Judy) VanderWall; daughter, Wendy (Brad) Staab; sister, Carol Warren; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and many close family and friends.

Born and raised in Oak Lawn, Illinois, Roy was the son of Herman and Anna (DeValk) VanderWall. After graduating from Oak Lawn High School in 1956, Roy served in the Coast Guard. He and Sandie married in 1958 at Mt. Greenwood Reformed Church where they were long time members. He worked as a meat cutter, meat market manager for National T, and sales manager for Ekrich. In 1970, Roy and Sandie started their own business, Jr’s Hotdogs, which grew into a franchised chain. Roy not only took great pride in his occupation, but he truly relished the friends he made during his time in business.

Roy was a lifelong fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, man of faith, and an exceptional cook. Before his passing, Roy forged an 80-year trail of laughter, wisdom, great story telling, love, and compassion.

“We are all out of blueberry. How about peach pie instead?” He will be missed!

A private family graveside service will be held.
